DUPONT, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's golf team has been saving its best golf of the season for when it matters the most – the postseason.
The Vikings claimed their sixth Great Northwest Athletic Conference team title with an 11-stroke victory over Northwest Nazarene in the two-day, 36-hole tournament that wrapped up play Tuesday at The Home Course.
WWU returned to the podium as GNAC champions for the first time since 2015 and will be making its 11
th trip to the NCAA Division II Championships receiving the conference automatic bid.
Western entered Tuesday with a nine-shot lead over NNU, but saw that margin slip to just a two-shot advantage midway through Tuesday's final round. The Vikings had a strong final nine holes to finish the round at 24-over-par 312 (three shots better than the first round) and concluded the tournament at 51-over-par 627 for the 11-shot win.
"I am so proud of this team, with how hard they played from beginning to end and how they just battled in the final round," said WWU Director of Golf
Luke Bennett. "At one point NNU closed the gap to two shots, but the team rose to the challenge and played fantastic golf down the stretch. Really clutch birdies by Sarah (Shea) and Elise (Sumner), and steady play from Kolby (Heggenes) and Dani (Bailey) made this a total team effort. All five team girls showed a lot of heart today and earned this GNAC title."
The Vikings had four players finish in the top six in the 20-player field, led by a tie for 3
rd place by sophomore
Sarah Shea and freshman
Dani Bailey. Both players completed the tournament at 12-over-par 156, wish Shea tallying a final-round 5-over-par 77 and Bailey turning in consistent rounds of 6-over-par 78.
Junior
Kolby Heggenes moved up to finish in 5
th place at 13-over-par 157 and second-year freshman
Elise Sumner was in 6
th at 14-over-par 158. Second-year freshman
Sophia Schmidt rounded out the Viking contingent tied for 13
th at 21-over-par 165.
Saint Martin's claimed the top two spots on the leaderboard with sophomore Kathryn Crimp taking home individual medalist honors at 9-over-par 153 (77-76). Hoku Nagamine finished one shot better than Bailey and Shea to received runner-up honors at 11-over-par 155.
