Track & Field Inches Towards Postseason With Solid Marks at Peyton-Shotwell Invitational

WWU records 11 event wins and records three program top-10 marks in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. – As the postseason grows closer, the Western Washington University Track & Field program continues to put up great performances.
 
Saturday was no different with several Vikings in action at the Peyton-Shotwell Invitational hosted by the University of Puget Sound at Baker Stadium.
 
The men's team squad combined for 165 points to finish second in the team competition, led by eight event wins and five second-place finishes.
 
A small contingent of women's team members competed in Tacoma, totaling 74 points for the fifth-highest mark among the six NCAA Division II and III programs in action. The Vikings recorded three event wins and a pair of second-place finishes.
 
WWU returns to action next weekend hosting the 39th Annual Ralph Vernacchia Track & Field Meet on Saturday, May 1 at Civic Stadium in Bellingham. More info on the Vernacchia T&F Meet can be found online at WWUVikings.com/Vernacchia.
 
MEN'S TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
Event winners for the Viking men included Lucas Brenek in the 400m (49.64), Kevin McDermott in the 1500m (3:51.00), Calahan Warren in the 5000m (14:36.67), Hunter Flick in the 110m Hurdles (14.65), Cordell Cummings in the 400m Hurdles (53.75), Trent Kibler in the High Jump (1.85m/6-0.75), Kacey Provo in the Pole Vault (4.53m/14-10.25) and Jaydon Tryon in the Javelin (53.00m/173-10).
 
McDermott's time in the 1500m moved him up to 7th in WWU history and Flick entered the WWU top-10 record book with the 6th-fastest time in the 110m Hurdles.
 
WOMEN'S TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
Event winners for the Viking women included Karlie Hurley in the 400m (57.00), Talia Dreicer in the 1500m (4:55.08) and Natalie Vetto in the Javelin (42.65m/139-11).
 
Hurley moved up to No. 7 in WWU history with her personal-best time in the 400m and Vetto set a season-best mark in the javelin to increase her NCAA II provisional qualifying mark.
 
VIKINGS GO 1-2 IN MEN'S 400M
Freshman Lucas Brenek (49.64) and junior Bryant Welch (50.17) went 1-2 in the men's 400m. Sophomore Ryan Witters added a 6th-place finish 51.98 seconds.
 
VETTO WINS JAVELIN COMPETITION
Senior Natalie Vetto won the javelin with a throw of 42.65m/139-11 for a season-best mark, increasing her NCAA II provisional qualifying mark. Vetto's previous top mark of 2021 was 42.06m/138-0 at the WWU Invitational on April 3 in Bellingham.
 
KIBLER WINS THE HIGH JUMP (AGAIN)
Freshman Trent Kibler won the high jump competition clearing 1.85m/6-0.75, marking the fourth win in four tries for the Tumwater native. Kibler's top mark of 2.00m/6-6.76 from the John Knight Twilight on April 9 is currently the No. 2 mark in the GNAC.
 
TRYON WINS JAVELIN
Sophomore Jaydon Tryon won the javelin with a throw of 53.00m/173-10 to top the four competitor field. Tryon, a transfer from Everett Community College, also won the javelin competition at the WWU Invitational (53.54m/175-8) and threw a personal-best 55.23m/181-2 at the John Knight Twilight.

The Vikings next home meet will be the Ralph Vernacchia Track & Field Meet on Saturday, May 1 at Civic Stadium in Bellingham.
