GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Western Washington University men's golf team is in 7
th place after the first two rounds of the Mustang Intercollegiate played Monday at Palm Valley Golf Club.
WWU is at 10-over-par 586 through the first 36 holes in the 13-team tournament, firing a 1-under-par 287 in the morning round and then finished the day with a 11-over-par 299. Conditions Monday on the course Monday were hot (high 90s temperatures) and windy.
"We were not at our best today, but those days happen," said WWU Director of Golf
Luke Bennett. "The guys battled all day long – 36 holes in the heat and wind really tested the patience of the team today. I have no doubt they will come out tomorrow ready to go. If they commit to what they want to do, they can achieve it. They have the talent, they just need to believe. We are looking forward to the final round tomorrow."
Junior captain
Devin Andrews leads the Viking contingent at 1-under-par 143 through the first two rounds, which included a collegiate career-low round of 4-under-par 68 in the morning (3 birdies, eagle, bogey). Andrews continued his solid play in the second round recording a birdie on three of his first five holes, but played his final 12 holes at 6-over-par to finish at 3-over-par 75. He heads into Tuesday's final round tied for 15
th place in the 78-player field.
"Devin had a solid day and played better than his final score indicates," added Bennett. "The morning round was rock solid. He had a couple bad breaks coming in during the afternoon but his game is looking good."
Junior
Brody Bonfilio is just outside the top 20, tied for 23
rd following rounds of 1-under-par 71 in the morning and 2-over-par 74 in the afternoon. Bonfilio matched Andrews with seven birdies on the day.
UT Permian Basin holds the team lead at 8-under-par 568, while NCAA Division I Grand Canyon holds the top three spots for individual medalist honors. Matthew Braley is 9-under-par through the first 36 holes with rounds of 7-under-par 65 and 2-under-par 70.
WWU will open the final round of play three strokes back of tournament host Western New Mexico (+7, 583) and 11 strikes back of 5
th-place Montana State Billings (-1, 575). The two-day, 54-hole tournament concludes Tuesday with the final round, with the Vikings teeing off No. 10 starting at 7 am.
