Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets at SPU

WWU drops to 7-2 during the spring season

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Washington University volleyball team was dealt a 3-0 loss Friday night in a road contest at Seattle Pacific University.
 
The Vikings endured only their second loss in nine spring matches during the abbreviated 2020-21 season, falling to the Falcons in straight sets 25-15, 25-20, 25-22. WWU is now 7-2 on the season, while SPU improves to 11-5. Both teams conclude their season with a doubleheader Saturday in Bellingham, with first serve at 12:30 pm on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
 
WWU held an early lead in each of the three sets, but SPU put together lengthy runs to record its second victory over the Vikings this season. The series is tied 2-2, after the Vikings won 13 consecutive matches.
 
Sophomore All-American outside hitter Calley Heilborn led the Vikings with nine kills and seven digs. Junior middle Chloe Roetcisoender added 5 kills and a team-high 4.0 blocks.
 
Running a 6-2 offense, senior Janae Payne led Western with 17 assists, with sophomore Malia Aleaga adding 10 assists.
 
SPU was led by nine kills and 11 digs from Maddie Batiste. Setter Lindsey Lambert recorded an 18-assist, 15-dig double-double for the Falcons.

SERIES HISTORY VS. SEATTLE PACIFIC
According to the WWU Volleyball Record Book, the Vikings lead the all-time series vs. Seattle Pacific 54-28, which includes an 18-3 record over the last 21 matches. SPU's victory in the first match on April 23 in Seattle snapped a string of 13 consecutive defeats vs. the Vikings. The spring series is tied 2-2 heading into tomorrow's doubleheader in Carver Gym.

The Vikings (7-2) close out the 2021 spring season Saturday hosting Seattle Pacific in a doubleheader on WECU Court in Caver Gym. Matches are scheduled for 12:30 pm and 5 pm, with both streaming live online at WWUVikings.com/VB_Watch.

ABOUT WWU VOLLEYBALL
The WWU volleyball program has risen to elite level by advancing to the NCAA Division II Championships in each of the last eight seasons and 14 of the last 19 dating back to the 2001 season. The winner of 10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships, Western won the 2018 GNAC title with a perfect 20-0 record, the 2017 championship by posting a 19-1 league and became a 3-peat champion with an 18-2 mark in 2019. Over the last four seasons the Vikings have combined to go 91-13 overall and 57-3 in conference play, and over the last six seasons are 141-27 (.839). Led by 21st-year head coach Diane Flick-Williams, the Vikings have posted a 209-42 record over the last nine seasons (.833 winning percentage) and have played in the NCAA II West Region championship match four of the last five seasons (2015-18), winning titles in 2015 and 2018. WWU played for the NCAA II national championship in 2007 and 2018, both national runner-up finishes, and have advanced to the NCAA Final Four in two of the past five seasons (2015 and 2018).
