WWU Men Set Program Record for All-GNAC Academic Selections

Vikings have 20 student-athletes earn academic awards for cumulative GPA over 3.20

5/18/2021 1:54:00 PM

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University Men's Track & Field team set a program record with 20 selections to the 2021 Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, presented by Barnes & Noble College.

WWU broke the record of 18 GNAC Academic All-Stars from the 2019 season, and over the last three seasons have had 55 academic all-conference award winners.

The lengthy list of award winners was highlighted by five student-athletes that earned the academic award for a third time in their career. Junior Sonny Chhim (3.58, Kinesiology), junior Mac Franks (3.66, Electrical & Computer Engineering), senior Eric Hamel (3.29, Manufacturing & Supply Chain Management), junior Cyrus McAllister (3.58, Biology) and senior Myles Smith (3.60, Kinesiology) joined a select list that now includes 30 Vikings that have been part of the GNAC All-Academic team three times during their collegiate career.

WWU second-year freshmen Solomon Duke (Energy Science & Technology) and Kale Engebretsen (Math) led the team with perfect 4.00 GPAs, while second-year freshmen Kacey Provo (undecided) and Ryan Greenwalt (Computer Science) both carry a 3.90 GPA.

To qualify for the GNAC All-Academic Teams, presented by Barnes & Noble College, nominees must be of sophomore eligibility or greater, have a minimum cumulative GPA or 3.20 or greater, be a letterwinner on their team and must be in their second year at the nominating institution.

Thanks to eligibility waivers provided by the NCAA due to the cancellation of the 2020 season, athletes who continue to hold freshman eligibility but are in their second season of competition at the nominating institution were eligible for selection to the GNAC All-Academic Team.
