ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Western Washington University Track & Field team was led by a podium finish in the 1500m from senior
Calahan Warren, and a pair of Second Team All-America performances by
Hannah Nienaber in the javelin and
Aliyah Dawkins in the high jump at the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Warren (Auburndale, FL) had a strong finish in the 1500m placing 6
th in 3:53.68 to earn First Team All-America honors. The senior, who will return for another year of eligibility in 2022, clocked a final lap time of 55.22 to move up six spots for his top-six national finish. Saturday marked his third time competing in outdoor nationals in the 1500m, placing 16
th in 2018 and 17
th in 2019, both while competing for Embry-Riddle.
The sixth-place finish by Warren was the highest by a WWU runner at the national meet since Keith Lemay was also 6
th in the 800m in 2008 (1:51.62) and the best 1500m performance at nationals since Anthony Tomisch placed fourth (3:48.72) in 2007. Warren set the WWU 1500m record in 3:44.82 on April 3 at the WWU Invitational, the No. 3 mark in GNAC history.

Nienaber (Battle Ground, WA/Prairie) finished just off the podium placing 9
th in the women's javelin to earn Second Team All-America honors. The senior battled windy conditions for a top throw of 42.16m/138-4, achieved on her second throw to advance her to the final round. This marks the seventh consecutive season that a WWU javelin thrower has earned an All-America certificate at the national championships. Nienaber entered the meet ranked No. 7 nationally with a top season throw and lifetime best of 47.52m/155-11 set at the John Knight Twilight on April 9.
Dawkins (North Mankato, MN/Mankato West) tied for 12
th in the 17-athlete field to earn Second Team All-America honors. Dawkins easily cleared the opening height of 1.65m/5-5, but stalled at 1.70m/5-7 to finish just inside the cutoff for All-America recognition as a second-team pick. She entered the meet with a qualifying mark of 1.73m/5-8 set during her winning performance at the GNAC Championships.
