Vikings in Action At GNAC Combined Championships

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – A trio of Western Washington University Track & Field team members were in action during the first day of the 2021 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Combined Event Championships Monday at the CWU Recreation Sports Complex.
 
In the men's decathlon, freshman Ryan Kenny is in 5th place (out of 11 competitors) through the first five events (out of 10) with 3,321 points. Sophomore Cooper Cummings is in 7th place with 3,058 points.
 
The 100m and 400m running events, high jump, long jump and shot put were held Monday, with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m to follow Tuesday.
 
Kenny had his best performance in the 100m tying for 1st place clocking 11.35 seconds to earn 784 points, and also earned 653 points clearing 1.83m/6-0 in the high jump.
 
Cummings placed 5th in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 1.80m/5-10.75 for 627 points and also established PB's in the 400m (54.27/628 points) and the long jump (6.50m/21-4/697 points).
 
In the women's heptathlon sophomore Leanne Kibbee is in 8th place through the first four (out of seven) events. Kibbee has scored 2,318 points, led by her 5th-place performance in the high jump to earn 599 points. The sophomore cleared 1.48m/4-10.25 to fall just short of a personal-best mark. Kibbee set PB marks in the 200m in 28.30 (607 points), bettering her previous best of 28.55, and the shot put with a mark of 8.85m/29-0.5 (454 points) to pass her previous best throw of 8.49m/27-10.25.
 
The first day of the heptathlon featured the 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m, with the long jump, javelin and 800m to follow tomorrow.
 
Day two of the GNAC Combined Events Championships will commence with the decathlon 110m hurdles at 10 am, followed by the heptathlon long jump at 11 am.
 
The top eight finishers in each the decathlon and heptathlon will earn points (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1) towards the team score for the GNAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship standings that will be held May 14-15 at McArthur Field in Monmouth, Oregon on the campus of Western Oregon University.
