DUPONT, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's golf team is tied for 4^th place out of 16 teams following the first round of the 2021 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships West/South Central Super Regional.
 
The Vikings shot a team round of 3-over-par 291 Thursday on The Home Course. The three-day, 54-hole tournament continues Friday with the second round and concludes Saturday.
 
The top four teams on top of the leaderboard at the end of the tournament will qualify for the NCAA II Championship Finals May 17-21 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. WWU is making its 22^nd consecutive appearance in the NCAA II regional championships and is aiming for a 10^th trip to the national tournament.
 
"Today was a solid round for the guys, battling through some pretty tough conditions midway through the day," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "After a slow start, Brody (Bonfilio) rebounded to have a really great round. The guys are excited to get after it in the morning tomorrow."
 
Junior Brody Bonfilio led the Vikings with an opening round score of 2-under-par 70, carding six birdies and eight pars, and is tied for 4^th place in the 86-player field. Bonfilio's six birdies were tied for the most by all players in the first round. After opening the round with consecutive bogeys he bounced back to birdie the next three holes.
 
Second-year freshman Drew Halili is tied for 16^th place following an even-par 72. The Port Orchard native finished the opening round with three birdies and three bogeys. He led the field playing the four par 3 holes at 2-under-par.
 
Sophomore Jordan Lee had a strong finish with three birdies over his final four holes to card a 2-over-par 74, tied for 37^th place.
 
Junior Devin Andrews is tied for 49^th at 3-over-par 75 and redshirt freshman Cody Oakes is tied for 71^st at 6-over-par 78.
 
"We got a couple of big finishes from and Jordan (Lee) and Devin (Andrews) to keep us in the mix," added Bennett.
 
The leaderboard is dominated by teams from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, with Montana State Billings holding a one-stroke lead (-4, 284) over Saint Martin's (-3, 285). WWU and Sonoma State are tied for 4^th place, one stroke back of Western New Mexico (+2, 290).
 
MSUB's Garrett Woodin holds the lead for individual medalist honors after shooting a 4-under-par 68. He has a one stroke lead over Saint Martin's Tyler Fitchett (-3, 69) and Colorado Mesa's Pablo Diaz.
 
Friday's second round begins at 7:30 am with the Vikings scheduled to start teeing off at 8:25 am.
  WWU is playing its second consecutive tournament without scoring average leader Aidan Thain, who is currently out with a minor injury … this marks the Vikings third tournament at The Home Course this season, with WWU taking 2^nd place at the GNAC Championships April 19-20 held at the same course … Drew Halili has recorded a round of par or better in each of his last three rounds … Brody Bonfilio recorded his third round of par or better this season (22 in his career).
