Vikings In The Hunt at NCAA II Regional

Vikings tied for 6th place at NCAA II West/South Central Regional through first two rounds

5/7/2021 7:40:00 PM

DUPONT, Wash. – Through the first two rounds of the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional, the Western Washington University men's golf program is tied for 6th place in the 16-team field.

The Vikings are in the hunt heading into Saturday's final round, with the top four teams on top of the leaderboard qualifying for the NCAA II National Championships May 17-21 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

WWU slipped two spots in the team standings following a 13-over-par round of 301 Friday. The Vikings head into the final round six spots back of 4th place, which is the qualification line for the national tournament.

"Today was a tough day. We didn't have our best stuff and the windy conditions gave us a little bit of trouble," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "But the guys grinded the round out and at the end of the day, we are in the hunt. There are a lot of teams in the mix and we'll head into the final round with nothing to lose and focus on what we can control. We have the talent and these guys know they can do it."

Freshman Drew Halili led the Vikings with a 1-over-par 73 Friday and is tied for 12th place in the 86-player field at 1-over-par 145.

Junior Devin Andrews also carded a 1-over-par 73 Friday and is tied for 21st place at 4-over-par 148 for the tournament. Sophomore Jordan Lee also turned in a solid round of 3-over-par 75 and is tied for 30th at 5-over-par 149.

Oklahoma Christian made a giant climb up the leaderboard to go from 11th place after the first round to 1st place heading into the final round following a 1-under-par 287. Tournament host Saint Martin's University is tied for 2nd place playing on its home course at 9-over-par 585, two strokes back of Oklahoma Christian (+7, 583). Colorado State-Pueblo is tied for 2nd with SMU and Texas A&M-Commerce is currently 4th at 10-over-par 586.

Andrew Ni of Colorado State-Pueblo holds the lead for individual medalist honors with consecutive rounds of 2-under-par 70.

Saturday's final round begins at 7:30 am with the Vikings scheduled to start teeing off at 11:10 am. Live results are available at WWUVikings.com/MG_Live.

VIKING NOTES

WWU is playing its second consecutive tournament without scoring average leader Aidan Thain, who is currently out with a minor injury … this marks the Vikings third tournament at The Home Course this season, with WWU taking 2nd place at the GNAC Championships April 19-20 held at the same course … WWU is making its 22nd consecutive NCAA Division II Regional Championships appearance, marking every season that WWU has competed at the NCAA level.
