SEATTLE, Wash. – In its final tune-up prior to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, the Western Washington University Track & Field team competed at the Ken Shannon Invitational at Husky Outdoor Track on the University of Washington campus.
The Vikings were led by a 1-2-3 finish in the men's 1500m, with
Calahan Warren (3:45.48),
Kevin McDermott (3:48.96) and
Mac Franks (3:49.47) all running under the NCAA II provisional qualifying mark. Warren fell just short of passing his own school record in the event of 3:44.82, while McDermott move up to 6
th and Franks 7
th in WWU history.
On the women's side,
Katie Potts won the discus competition with a personal-best throw of 42.44m/139-3 to remain 9
th in WWU history. Potts also placed 3
rd in the shot put with a top mark of 11.47m/41-0.25.
Karlie Hurley placed 2
nd in the triple jump with a top leap of 11.94m/39-2.25, just short of her season-best mark of 12.04m/39-6. Hurley currently ranked 29
th in NCAA Division II in the triple jump.
Natalie Vetto recorded a season-best mark in the javelin to place 3
rd out of seven competitors (top D2 finisher) with a throw of 43.77m/143-7. Vetto increased her national standing with mark above the provisional qualifying standard, currently in the top 25 in NCAA II.
For the WWU men,
Koby Okezie also placed 3
rd in the 110m Hurdles (14.71) and
Cyrus McAllister won the two-competitor long jump (6.04m/19-9.75).
UP NEXT FOR THE VIKINGS
The Vikings will compete in the 2021 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships next Friday and Saturday in Monmouth, Oregon. The two-day championship event will be held at McArthur Stadium on the Western Oregon University campus. WWU is the defending men's champion winning the title in 2019, the program's seventh outdoor GNAC title.
