DUPONT, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's golf team needed a little final-round magic to qualify for the national tournament, but came up just short placing 8th at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf West/South Central Regional at The Home Course.
Making its 22nd consecutive NCAA Championships appearance – a streak that spans every season the Vikings have played in the NCAA ranks – but concluded their season after not finishing in the top four of the 16-team regional.
WWU shot a final-round team score of 13-over-par 301 – matching Friday's second round score – to finish the 54-hole tournament at 29-over-par 893. The cutout for the top four teams was at 18-over-par 882.
Texas A&M Commerce (+10, 874), Saint Martin's (+15, 879), Sonoma State (+16, 880) and Colorado State-Pueblo (+18, 882) were the four teams advancing to the national finals May 17-21 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
"Today was definitely not the way we wanted to end the season. We had a great opportunity today and we let it slip away," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "Hats off to the teams that are advancing to nationals."
Freshman Drew Halili led the Vikings finishing in a tie for 15th place in the 86-player field, turning in a 5-over-par 221 for the tournament (72-73-76).
Sophomore Jordan Lee (74-75-74) and junior Devin Andrews (75-73-75) tied for 26th place at 7-over-par 223.
WWU played its second consecutive postseason tournament without scoring average leader Aidan Thain, who was out with a minor injury after winning three GNAC Golfer of the Week awards during the season.
Thomas Jenkins of Sonoma State won individual medalist honors finishing at 5-under-par 211, with his final-round 3-under-par 69 edging out Zach Burch of Texas A&M-Commerce for the one-stroke victory.
Garrett Woodin of Montana State Billings placed 3rd at 3-under-par 213 and qualifies for nationals as an individual.
