Vikings Score 2-1 Road Win Over SPU

WWU scores an early and late first-half goal in victory over SPU

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team scored an early and late first-half goal, and then held on for a 2-1 road victory over Seattle Pacific University Saturday evening at Interbay Stadium.

The Vikings won their third consecutive game to improve to 3-1-0 overall during the abbreviated spring season. SPU dropped to 3-2-0 during the spring season. Both teams concluded their seasons next Saturday at Harrington Field with kickoff scheduled for 1 pm in Bellingham.

The Vikings took the early lead when sophomore forward Alessandro Tomasi pounced on an errant pass from the SPU goalkeeper and tapped in an empty-net shot from 13-yards out early in the 6th minute.

WWU added to its lead late in the first half when senior forward Alex Whiting scored in the 44th minute. Whiting took a pass from sophomore forward Johan Espinoza on the left side of the box, created a fraction of space with his first touch, and curled his shot into the upper right quadrant for his first goal of the spring (3rd as a Viking).

SPU got a late free-kick goal from 28-yards out off the left foot of Musa Ali in the 79th minute, that was just out of the reach of reserve goalkeeper Patrick Restum.

WWU starting goalkeeper Brandon Locke made three saves in 65 scoreless minutes.

The Vikings held a 13-7 advantage in shots and a slight 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had four corners and four saves.

SERIES HISTORY VS. SPU
