2021 Viking Golf Classic

Bill Wright Viking Golf Classic Returns in August

Annual charity golf tournament helps raise funds for student-athlete scholarships and program enhancements

7/23/2021 11:20:00 AM

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – After a year off, the annual WWU Athletics Viking Golf Classic returns to Sudden Valley Golf & Country Club on August 20.

The event has been named the Bill Wright Viking Golf Classic in honor of golfing legend William "Bill" Wright, who passed away in February at the age of 84. Wright recorded one of the greatest achievements by a student-athlete in the history of Western Washington University, winning the U.S. Amateur Public Links championship in 1959 to become the first African-American champion of the USGA.

The 2021 Bill Wright Viking Golf Classic is promised to be a fun-filled day for all Vikings to enjoy a great round of golf with friends complete with food, drink and prizes while supporting WWU Athletics. The tournament will take place at Sudden Valley Golf & Country Club in Bellingham on Friday, August 20 in a four-person scramble. Optional practice rounds and a hosted horse race will also be part of the two-day event on Thursday, August 19.

"We look forward to welcoming all our alumni, family and friends out for a wonderful day of golf to help support Viking Athletics," said WWU Director of Athletics Steve Card. "It will be a fun day on the golf course seeing a lot of faces we have been missing, all with the common goal of supporting our student-athletes and coaches as they continue to define excellence both in the classroom and in competition."

All tournament proceeds benefit Viking Athletics through student-athlete scholarships and program enhancements as WWU's 15 intercollegiate varsity sports look forward to another successful year in 2021-22.
