Vikings Fall 4-3 to Chaminade in Double OT

WWU scores season-high three goals in loss to open Hawai'i road trip

HONOLULU, Hawai'i  – The Western Washington University men's soccer team opened its three-game Hawai'i road trip with a 4-3 double-overtime loss against Chaminade Tuesday afternoon at St. Louis Field.

The Vikings dropped to 1-4-0 on the season despite scoring a season-high three goals in the contest. Chaminade improved to 2-1-0 overall.

WWU trailed 2-0 through the first 40 minutes of the contest, which featured a pair of Chaminade goals in the opening 22 minutes of the contest. The Vikings struck for two late first-half goals in the 42nd and 44th minutes – one minute, 22 seconds apart – to tie the game 2-2 heading into overtime.

Junior midfielder Gus Diehl got the Vikings on the board with a free kick goal that found its way through the Silverswords defense to cut the deficit to one goal. Just over a minute later, Alec Zimmerman found the back of the net with a brilliant strike across the box after a through ball from senior midfielder Drew Farnsworth.

Chaminade retook the lead five minutes into the second half when Kelton Cheney scored his second goal of the game at the 50:07 mark.

The back-and-forth game continued just over two minutes later when Farnsworth found the equalizer off a rebounded shot from Tyler Hughes.

The game shifted to a defensive battle through the remainder of regulation and in the first 10-minute overtime period. WWU had its opportunities taking 11 shots in the second half, but were held off the scoreboard through a few unlucky chances.

Chaminade scored the golden goal in the 105th minute with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Joaquin Maud scored the game-winner on a shot from the left side of the box that trickled into the net past WWU goalkeeper Patrick Restum.

"It was unfortunate to lose like that today. The guys gave it their all and were unlucky not to score more," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "We'll hit reset and on to the next one Friday vs. Hawai'i Pacific."

UP NEXT
WWU (1-4-0) remain in Hawai'i and will play against Hawai'i Pacific on Friday (9/24) and Hawai'i Hilo on Sunday (9/26). WWU opens GNAC play next week with road contests at Northwest Nazarene (9/30) and Saint Martin's (10/2). The Vikings  are one game into a stretch of five consecutive road games, which will be followed by a season-high five-game homestand October 9-30.
