AIEA, Hawai'i – The Western Washington University women's golf team moved up two spots on the leaderboard to finish in ninth place out of 16 teams at the Southwest Airlines HPU Sharks Shootout at Pearl Country Club.

 

WWU showed a 17-storke improvement from Tuesday's first round, carding a 14-over-par 302 to finish at 45-over-par 621.

 

Freshman Emma Worgum shot a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to lead WWU finishing in a tie for 16th place in the 84-player field. Worgum's final round featured a pair of birdies to finish at 6-over-par 150. Junior Elise Sumner was inside the top 25 tying for 22nd place at 8-over-par 152 with matching rounds of 4-over-par 76.

 

Cal State San Marcos won the team title by a 20-storke margin, finishing the 36-hole tournament at 5-under-par 571. Point Loma finished second at 15-over-par 591 and West Texas A&M moved up five spots on the final leaderboard to finish third at 21-over-par 597.

 

Breann Horn of Cal State San Marcos won individual medalist honors finishing at 7-under-par 137 with rounds of 69-68 on the par 72 layout. Alyssa Campbell earned runner-up honors at 3-under-par 141 (70-71).

 

The Vikings remain in Hawai'i closing out the fall portion of the 2022-23 schedule Friday-Saturday at the Southwest Airlines Dennis Rose Intercollegiate at Hapuna Golf Course in Waimea, Hawai'i.

ABOUT WWU WOMEN'S GOLF

The WWU women's golf team is in its 30th season as an intercollegiate sport in 2022-23. WWU has a rich history on the links, winning the first five GNAC Championships beginning in 2011 and returned to the podium with back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022. WWU made its 12th appearance in the NCAA II West Regional Championships in 2022 after earning the GNAC's automatic bid. WWU has also made six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in nine of the 11 years it has been awarded, including 2020-21 Player of the Year Elise Sumner and 2021-22 award winner Megan Billeter. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has had nine All-Americans.
