Vikings Drop 2-1 GNAC Road Game at SPU

Vikings score late goal by Johan Espinoza, but comeback falls short

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 contest to rival Seattle Pacific University Saturday evening in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at Interbay Stadium.

The Vikings and Falcons were scoreless until the 56th minute when SPU broke through on a goal by Owen Gortner. The Falcons played add-on in the 77th minute on second goal by Gortner. Seeing a last-minute miracle, the WWU senior Johan Espinoza scored a goal in the 89th minute, but the comeback came up short in the 2-1 loss.

WWU dropped to 11-3-3 overall and is tied for second place in the GNAC standings with Simon Fraser with 21 points (7-3-0). The Vikings trail first-place Northwest Nazarene (7-2-1) by one point heading into the final week of the regular season.

Seattle Pacific (5-5-6, 4-2-3 GNAC) held a decisive 18-6 advantage in shots and a 7-3 lead in shots on goal. WWU goalkeeper Patrick Restum made five saves for the Vikings.

In the first meeting of the season the Vikings defeated the Falcons 3-1 on October 1 at Harrington Field in Bellingham.

The Vikings (11-3-3, 7-3-0 GNAC) play their third consecutive road game on Thursday traveling to play first-place NNU with kickoff scheduled for 12 pm MT/11 am PT. WWU will host Montana State Billings in the regular-season finale on Saturday at Harrington Field with Senior Night scheduled for a 7 pm kickoff.
