WAIMEA, Hawai'i – The Western Washington University women's golf team closed out a solid fall season tying for fifth place at the Southwest Airlines Dennis Rose Intercollegiate with play held Friday and Saturday at the Hapuna Golf Course.
WWU opened the final round in second place in the 16-team field and finished in a two-way tie for fifth place. A day after recording a top-five round in program history at 6-over-par 294, the Vikings wrapped up the tournament with a 17-over-par 305. Western tied with Biola in the fifth spot on the team leaderboard.
Cal State San Marcos completed the Hawaiian sweep, adding the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate team title to the HPU Sharks Shootout championship earlier in the week. The Cougars completed the two-day tournament at 7-over-par 583 for a 13-stroke win over Point Loma. The Vikings were part of a tightly-packed leaderboard only three shots out of second place.
Freshman Emma Worgum capped a solid fall debut to her collegiate career tying for second place in the 83-player field at even-par 144. Worgum fired a 3-under-par 69 in the opening round tying for the second-best round in program history and finished with a 3-over-par 75 on Saturday. The product of La Conner High School tied for second in the field with eight birdies.
Junior Claire Moon carded WWU's best final round at 2-over-par 74, moving up the leaderboard to finish tied for 23rd at 6-over-par 150. Junior Elise Sumner tied for 35th at 9-over-par 153.
"The ladies were close this week at Hapuna. Emma played some extremely solid golf, she followed up her special round yesterday with another solid round Saturday while in the final group," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "I'm very pleased with Emma's fall performance in her first collegiate tournaments and I'm excited to see what she will do in the spring. The ladies showed signs they can compete with some of the best teams in the West Region. We will look to clean up a few things this off-season and come out ready to play in the spring."
Brady Turnquist of Biola University won individual medalist honors at 2-under-par 142 (71-71) for a two-stroke victory.
The Vikings five tournament fall schedule featured a tournament win at the Saint Martin's Invitational and third-place finish at the WWU Invitational. The 2022-23 spring schedule will be released in the next month.

The WWU women's golf team is in its 30th season as an intercollegiate sport in 2022-23. WWU has a rich history on the links, winning the first five GNAC Championships beginning in 2011 and returned to the podium with back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022. WWU made its 12th appearance in the NCAA II West Regional Championships in 2022 after earning the GNAC's automatic bid. WWU has also made six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in nine of the 11 years it has been awarded, including 2020-21 Player of the Year Elise Sumner and 2021-22 award winner Megan Billeter. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has had nine All-Americans.
