VISTA, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf program opened the spring season with a great performance in the first two rounds of the Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge Golf Club.

 

The Vikings carded team rounds of 292 (+4) and even-par 288 to stand in 3rd place out of 14 teams with a score of 4-over-par 580 in the two-day, 54-hole tournament. Tournament host Cal State San Marcos holds an eight-stroke lead playing the first two rounds at 8-under-par 568, with Colorado State Pueblo four shots ahead of the Vikings at even-par 580.

 

"It felt really good to be back in competition and the guys played very solid all day on a challenging course," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "They did a great job adjusting to windy conditions and fast and sloppy greens. We are looking forward to getting out there tomorrow for the final round."

 

Junior Jordan Lee paced the Vikings with rounds of 73-69=142 to stand in 6th place in the 80-player field. 

 

"Just a solid day for Jordan from start to finish," added Bennett. "He really had it going this afternoon with his 3-under-par 69."

 

Seniors Aidan Thain (76-68=144) and Devin Andrews (71-73=144) are tied for 12th place at even par through the first two rounds.

 

"A great round of golf from Aidan in the afternoon – a bogey-free round is special and to throw in four birdies is fantastic," said Bennett.

 

Freshman Conrad Brown is tied for 33rd following rounds of even-par 72 and 7-over-par 79. Lee and Andrews paced the Vikings with eight birdies in the first two rounds and Thain was one of seven players to record an eagle when he had a three on the par 5 14th hole in his opening round.

 

Christian Schrodt of Dominican holds the individual lead at 8-under-par 136 with rounds of 66 (-6) and 70 (-2) on the par 72, 7,008-yard layout. 

 

The Vikings conclude the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational Tuesday with the final 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament. A shotgun start is scheduled for 7:30 am at Shadowridge Golf Club. The final round leaderboard can be tracked online via Golfstat with a direct link at wwuvikings.com/MG_Live.
