PLEASANTON, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf team tied for 3rd place at the Bay Area Invitational played at The Club at Ruby Hill in Northern California.
The Vikings turned in a three-round team score of 22-over-par 886 to record their second consecutive third-place finish to open the spring schedule. Cal State San Marcos won the team title at even-par 864, followed by Sonoma State (+19, 883) and WWU tied tournament host Cal State East Bay three shots back of SSU.
Senior
Aidan Thain again led the Vikings shooting even-par 216 over the three-round tournament with scores of 70-72-74. Junior
Jordan Lee tied for 12th at 12-over-par 220 and senior
Devin Andrews finished 16th in the 80-player field at 5-over-par 221. Freshman
Seth King tied for the team's low score of the final round with a 2-over-par 74 finishing in a tie for 40th place.
"This was not the way we wanted to finish the tournament, but the guy splayed tough all day in cold and windy conditions," said WWU Director of Golf
Luke Bennett. "Overall the last two weeks are a very solid start to the spring season, but still plenty of room for improvement. We'll get back to working on our game and look forward to picking the spring schedule back up at Stanislaus the end of March."
Matt Pennington of Cal State San Marcos led the tournament wire-to-wire to claim individual medalist honors at 8-under-par 208 (67-67-208), earning a five-stroke victory over teammate Matthew Moss (-3, 213).
WWU will take the next month off and returns to action March 28-29 at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at Turlock Golf & Country Club in Turlock, California.
