SEATTLE, Wash. – Despite having only 13 student-athletes in action Saturday at the SPU Final Qualifier, the Western Washington University Track & Field team recorded one school record and seven total program top-10 marks at Dempsey Indoor.
Junior
Mac Franks and sophomore
Drew Weber finished 1-2 in the 800m, just like they did earlier in the week at the GNAC Championships with both running sub 1:51. Franks set a PR to better his own WWU record by one second running 1:50.07, with Weber close behind in 1:50.61, the top two times in WWU indoor history.
The time by Franks moved him up to No. 4 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history and likely will be rewarded with a trip to the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. Franks is also a contender for a spot at nationals in the mile with a top time of 4:02.28 ranking No. 11 in the nation entering the weekend.
Four women's distance runners etched their name in the top-10 record book, with three in the mile and one in the 3,000m.
Mia Crocker won the mile in 5:03.57 for the No. 5 time in WWU history, followed by
Sophie Wright (No. 7, 5:05.41) and
Brooke Wedin (No. 9, 5:06.90) both running top-10 times in WWU indoor history.
Ila Davis set a PR in the 3000m in 10:12.11 for the 8th-fastest in program history.
Additionally, sophomore
Alec Ritter placed 6th in the mile with a PR of 4:15.70 for the No. 8 time in WWU history.
Ethan Sterkel won the long jump with a top mark of 7.22m/23-8.25 and both
Aliyah Dawkins (1.68m/5-6) and
Beau Sheeran (2.01m/6-7) finished 2nd in the high jump competitions.
