BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University Track & Field program swept the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week awards for competition held February 21-27.
Junior
Mac Franks (800m) and freshman
Mia Crocker (Mile) swept the men's and women's track athlete of the week honors, while
Ethan Sterkel (Long Jump) and
Aliyah Dawkins (High Jump) took home field athlete of the week awards.
The four weekly awards for the Vikings were from marks achieved at Saturday's SPU Qualifier, with the GNAC Championships earlier in the week not factoring into the selection of the weekly honors.
Franks earned his second Track Athlete of the Week award during the indoor season after lowering his PR and WWU record in the 800m with a time of 1:50.07. His winning time at the SPU Final Qualifier ranks No. 10 in Division II this season and is No. 4 all-time in GNAC history.
Sterkel won his fourth Men's Field Athlete of the Week award this season after winning the long jump at the SPU Final Qualifier by nearly a foot with a mark of 7.22m/23-8.25.
Crocker was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Week after she won the mile in a time of 5:03.57, the third-fastest time in the GNAC this season and No. 5 in WWU indoor history. Crocker was one of three WWU competitors to record a top-10 WWU time in the event, with
Sophie Wright and
Brook Wedin breaking into the record book.
Dawkins earned her second GNAC Athlete of the Week award this season after she finished second in the high jump, tying her season-best mark of 1.68m/5-6. Earlier in the week Dawkins was selected as the Female Field Athlete of the Meet at the GNAC Championships.
