ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Western Washington University women's golf team opened the spring season Monday competing at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Corica Park South Golf Course.

 

Through the first 18 holes of the 36-hole tournament, the Vikings are in 11th place in the 14-team field following an opening round score of 34-over-par 322.

 

Freshman Claire Moon leads the Viking contingent tied for 24th place in the 75-player field after shooting a 5-over-par 75 in the first round. Moon carded a pair of birdies and nine pars in her round. Sophomore Sophia Schmidt cracked the top 50 with a first-round 9-over-par 81 to enter the final round in 49th place.

 

Tournament host Cal State East Bay leads the team standings finishing the first round at 4-over-par 292 for a six-stroke lead over Cal State Los Angeles. Academy of Art (+11, 299), Cal State Monterey Bay (+13, 301), Biola (+15, 303) and Sonoma State (+15, 303) round out the tournament top five.

 

Regina Parra (Holy Names), Drishti Karumbaya (Cal State East Bay) and Mary Grace Davidson (Biola) are tied for the individual medalist least all shooting 2-under-par 70 in the first round.

 

Tuesday's final round is scheduled for an 8 am shotgun start with the Vikings teeing off holes 10-13 while paired with Northwest Nazarene, Chico State and Western New Mexico. The live leaderboard can be followed online by pointing your web browser to wwuvikings.com/WG_Live.

WWU is part of a 14-team field that will compete in a 36-hole stroke play tournament. The Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout is hosted by Cal State East Bay and is played on the par 72 Corica Park South Course. WWU is right back in action next week at the Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge Golf Club in Vista, California (North of San Diego). WWU will also play in the Palm Valley Classic in Goodyear, Arizona April 1-2 and then the GNAC Championships April 18-19 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

ABOUT WWU WOMEN'S GOLF

The WWU women's golf team begins its 29th season as an intercollegiate sport in 2021-22. WWU has a rich history on the links, winning the first five GNAC Championships beginning in 2011 and returned to the podium in 2021. WWU has made 11 appearances in the NCAA II West Regional Championships. WWU has also made six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in eight of the 10 years it has been awarded, including 2020-21 Player of the Year Elise Sumner. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has produced nine All-Americans.
