TURLOCK, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf team completed a wire-to-wire tournament victory at the 47th Annual Hanny Stanislaus Invitational with the 54-hole tournament wrapping up play Tuesday at Turlock Golf & Country Club.
The Vikings tamed the par 72, 6,688-yard layout to finish with a team score of 2-over-par 866 to win the 15-team tournament. WWU held off GNAC foe Simon Fraser for a one-stroke lead for the second tournament victory of the 2021-22 season. The Vikings, who entered the tournament with the No. 1 ranking in the West Region, completed play in the two-day tournament with a 5-over-par 293 on Tuesday.
"Talk about a fantastic team win. They all contributed to this victory and I am so happy for them," said WWU Director of Golf
Luke Bennett. "I'm excited to feed off this momentum as we get closer to conference and the postseason."
Senior
Aidan Thain recorded his collegiate victory, sharing individual medalist honors with Saint Martin's senior Tyler Fitchett. Thain and Fitchett, two of the GNAC's top scoring leaders, played four sudden-death playoff holes to a tie before travel plans ended the playoff.
Thain carded a trio of under par rounds (69-70-70) for a tournament total 7-under-par 209. Thain's final round four birdies, with his only blemish a double-bogey six on the Par 4 12th hole. For the tournament the senior co-captain recorded 35 pars, 12 birdies and one eagle. He played Turlock G&CC's 10 par 4 holes at a tournament-best 3-under-par.
"Aidan played some extremely solid golf especially down the stretch. Her birdied three of the last four holes to get the win. I am so happy for him," added Bennett.
Freshman
Conrad Brown held the individual lead to open the final round and finished in a tie for 5th place at 4-under-par 212 (68-70-74). Brown matched Thain with 12 birdies in the tournament.
"Truly a very solid tournament by Conrad," said Bennett. "He showed he is wise beyond his years with how he rallied after starting with a double bogey. He birdied two of his last three holes, which was big for him and huge for the team."
Freshman
Seth King recorded a top-30 finish in the 83-player field finishing in a tie for 29th place at 7-over-par 223 (76-72-75). Junior
Jordan Lee moved up five spots on the leaderboard to place in a tie for 36th place at 10-over-par 226 (77-75-74) and senior
Devin Andrews tied for 53rd place at 14-over-par 230 (73-81-76).
Western held off a late-charging Simon Fraser squad that finished in 2nd one stroke back of the Vikings at 3-over-par 867. Tournament host Stanislaus State finished in a tie for 3rd place in the 15-team field on its home course at 4-over-par 868. Sonoma State turned in the low team round of the final round at 16-under-par 272 to move up four spots on the leaderboard to tie Stanislaus State for 3rd place.
UP NEXT FOR THE VIKINGS
The Vikings look to carry its momentum into the final regular season tournament next week at the Palm Valley Classic (April 4-5) at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona. The 2022 GNAC Championships will be held April 18-19 at Coeur d'Alene Golf Resort in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
