Viks Return to Action with Success at Husky Open

WWU places first and third in collegiate varsity four race

SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 4 nationally-ranked Western Washington University women's rowing team was back in regatta action Saturday at the Husky Open on Montlake Cut.
 
After a week of spring break training on Lake Samish in Bellingham, the Vikings jumped right back into competition with three crews in action Saturday morning in Seattle.
 
In the first event of the day a pair of four-oared boats raced in the women's varsity 4+ matching up against the University of Portland and Lewis & Clark College. WWU's crew led by coxswain Claudia Webster and stroke Emma Clark recorded a decisive victory finishing in 8:01.049 ahead of Portland (8:09.176). WWU's second entry was third in 8:29.570.
 
The Vikings placed second in the varsity eight race behind the University of Portland in a time of 7:18.416, well ahead of third-place Seattle University (7:26.411).
 
Led by 24th-year head coach John Fuchs, the Vikings completed their second of five regular-season regattas leading up to the GNAC Championships on May 14 in Dexter, Oregon and the NCAA Championships May 27-29 in Sarasota, Florida. The Vikings are right back in action next Saturday, April 9 racing against GNAC rivals Seattle Pacific and Cal Poly Humboldt in the Falcon Regatta on the Lake Washington Ship Canal in Seattle.
