Vikings Set For Another NCAA Appearance

WWU announced as No. 12 seed in NCAA II West Regional May 2-4 in Stockton, California

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – For the 12th time in program history, the Western Washington University women's golf program will compete in the NCAA Division II Golf Championships. 
 
The Vikings won their seventh Great Northwest Athletic Conference title, repeating as champions to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. WWU was announced as the No. 12 seed in the West Region by the NCAA on Monday.
 
This will be Western's second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships after finishing 9th during the 2021 season with the regional championship played in Denton, Texas.
 
The West regional, one of four across the country, will be held May 2-4 at Brookside Golf & Country Club in Stockton, California. The California Collegiate Athletic Association and Visit Stockton will serve as host for the three-day, 54-hole tournament. The NCAA Championships field consists of 48 teams and 24 individuals, with 12 teams in each of the four regions.
 
The top five teams in the east, south and west regions, and the top three in the central, along with the top two individuals from each region not on these teams will move on to the championship finals May 10-14 at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Georgia.
 
WWU earned the automatic bid with a 10-stroke victory at the 2022 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships held April 18-19 at The Coeur d'Alene Resort in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Sophomore Elise Sumner was the individual champion shooting 7-over-par. Sophomore Dani Bailey came in second shooting 9-over-par and junior Megan Billeter followed close behind in fifth place shooting 13-over-par.
 
THE WEST REGIONAL FIELD
Here is a look at the 12-team field for the 2022 NCAA Division II Golf Championships West Regional that will be held May 2-4 at Brookside Golf & Country Club in Stockton, California. The West Regional features a 66-player field with five players from each of the 12 teams and six individuals. The tournament is a 54-hole, three-round competition with 18 holes played each day (Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday). The top five teams will advance to the NCAA II Women's Golf Championships that will be held May 10-14 at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Georgia.

ABOUT WWU WOMEN'S GOLF
The WWU women's golf team is in its 29th season as an intercollegiate sport in 2021-22. WWU has a rich history on the links, winning the first five GNAC Championships beginning in 2011 and returned to the podium with back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022. WWU will be making its 12th appearance in the NCAA II West Regional Championships in 2022 after earning the GNAC's automatic bid. WWU has also made six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in eight of the 10 years it has been awarded, including 2020-21 Player of the Year Elise Sumner. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has had nine All-Americans.
