T&F Records 11 Event Wins at PLU Invite

WWU men’s team records seven event wins, women four at meet in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. – The Western Washington University Track & Field team was back in action Saturday and recorded 11 event wins at the PLU Invitational.
 
The WWU men's squad logged seven event wins and the women had four in the meet held on the PLU Campus in Tacoma.
 
Men's event winners for the Vikings included Koby Okezie in the 110m Hurdles (15.13) and Bryant Welch led a 1-2-3 finish for the Vikings in the 200m in 21.82. Jonah Bloom won the 800m in 2:00.20, Quinn Wilcox paced the field in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 9:40.54, Jalen Javurek won the 10,000m in 32:20.72 and Ben Malquist won the shot put with a throw of 14.76m/40-5.25. Malquist was also 2nd in the discus (44.98m/147-7).
 
Ethan Sterkel and Beau Sheeran finished 2-3 as the top collegiate competitors in the high jump with both clearing 1.97m/6-5.5. Sterkel added a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.74m/22-1.5. Jaydon Tryon was the top collegiate finisher in the javelin with a toss of 50.40m/165-4 and Damian Mercado just missed his PR winning the triple jump with a mark of 13.56m/44-6. Additional second-place finishers included Mark Daniels in the 400m (50.46) and Will Henry in the 1500m (4:00.09).
 
Event winners for the women were Sophie Wright in the 800m (2:16.83), Jessica Neal in the high jump (1.61m/5-3.25), Ila Davis in the 5000m (17:49.45) and Katie Potts in the shot put with a throw of 12.44m/40-9.75. Second-place finishes by the Vikings included Brittany Aquino in the 10,000m (40:06.60), Leanne Kibbee in the long jump (5.12m/16.9.75), Jamie Sanford in the triple jump (10.20m/33-5.75) and the 4x100m relay squad (50.96).
 
UP NEXT FOR THE VIKINGS
The Vikings are back in action next week sending a contingent of student-athletes to Southern California for the Mt. Sac Relays, Bryan Clay Invitational and the Long Beach State Invitational (April 13-16). WWU will then compete in the CWU Wildcat Invitational on April 23 and host the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational in the regular-season finale April 30 at Civic Stadium in Bellingham.
