Vikings Set Record With 22 Academic Awards

Vikings have record 22 student-athletes earn GNAC academic awards for cumulative GPA over 3.20

5/19/2022 11:42:00 AM

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University Men's Track & Field team set a program record with 22 selections to the 2022 Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, presented by Barnes & Noble College.

The Vikings led all GNAC teams with the 22 academic awards for the 2021-22 indoor and outdoor seasons, besting the 20 awards from last season. Over the last four seasons, the WWU men's program has earned 77 GNAC Academic All-Star awards.

The lengthy list of award winners was highlighted by three student-athletes that earned the academic award for a fourth time in their career. Mac Franks (3.57, Electrical & Computer Engineering), Sonny Chhim (3.56, Kinesiology) and Cyrus McAllister (3.59, Biology) are among only five four-time award winners in program history.

Ryan Witters (3.30, Geology) and Mark Daniels (3.68, Human Services) added their names to the list of 32
Vikings that have been part of the GNAC All-Academic team at least three times during their collegiate career. Kaleb Korta (3.72, Business Management) also became a three-time award winner including one honor earned as a student-athlete at the University of Alaska-Anchorage.

WWU's 22 awards led the GNAC ahead of Central Washington University (20) and Simon Fraser University (12).

To qualify for the GNAC All-Academic Teams, presented by Barnes & Noble College, nominees must be of sophomore eligibility or greater, have a minimum cumulative GPA or 3.20 or greater, be a letterwinner on their team and must be in their second year at the nominating institution.

Thanks to eligibility waivers provided by the NCAA due to the cancellation of the 2020 season, players who continue to hold freshman eligibility but are in their second season of competition at the nominating institution were eligible for selection to the GNAC All-Academic Team.
