PUEBLO, Colo. – The Western Washington University men's golf team regained its form Friday with a 1-under-par team round during the second round of the NCAA Division II West/South Central Super Regional Thursday at Pueblo Country Club.
The Vikings were one of 10 teams in the 20-team field to record a team round under par on Friday, showing a 13-shot improvement from Thursday's opening round. WWU fired a 1-under-par 283 on the par 71 layout and is in 15th place entering Saturday's final round at 11-over-par 579. Only the top four teams advance to the national championships in Detroit, so the Vikings know they will have to record an impressive final round to keep the season going. WWU is 13 strokes back of the top four spots entering Saturday's final round.
"Today was a small step in the right direction. A couple ups and downs, we had it to 5-under-par on the day twice going into more holes with opportunities, and we went the opposite direction," said WWU Director of Golf
Luke Bennett. "The guys definitely have the ability and are close to throwing out a low one. We are looking forward to the opportunity to go out early tomorrow with the hopes of posting a low score."
WWU's second round was highlighted by all four scoring players recording a round of par or better, led by a 1-under-par 70 from junior
Jordan Lee. Senior
Devin Andrews backed up his 1-under-par 70 in the first round with an even-par 71 and is tied for 20th in the 108-player field at 1-under-par 141.
Lee is also in the top 30 in the field tied for 25th place at even-par 142.
Senior
Aidan Thain bounced back from a first-round 6-over-par 77 to shoot an even-par 71, which included four birdies and an eagle. The GNAC Player of the Year played his final 11 holes at 3-under-par.
No. 16 nationally-ranked Midwestern State leads the team standings at 11-under-par 557 following a 13-under-par team round of 271 Friday. They hold a one stroke lead over Colorado Mesa (-10, 558). Tournament host Colorado State-Pueblo is in third place at 7-under-par 561 and St. Mary's (TX) is holding down the fourth spot at 2-under-par 556.
Jake Doggett (Midwestern State) and Dakota Gillman (Colorado Mesa) are tied for individual medalist honors at 7-under-par 135, holding a one-stroke lead over Timmy Cavarno of Colorado Mesa.
