PUEBLO, Colo. – The Western Washington University men's golf turned its best team round of the NCAA Division II West/South Central Super Regional in Saturday's final round at Pueblo Country Club.
The Vikings fired a 2-under-par 282 to finish the three-day regional in a four-way tie for 13th place in the 20-team regional. WWU was 13 strokes back of the cut line with the top four finishing teams advancing to the national championship tournament in Dearborn, Michigan.
Knowing they needed to go low after an opening round 296, the Vikings responded with consecutive rounds under par, but it was ultimately not enough to keep the season alive. WWU made its 23rd consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships.
Senior
Devin Andrews had a solid regional tying for 15th place with three rounds of par-or-better to close out his collegiate career. Andrews fired a final round of 1-under-par 70 to finish at 2-under-par 211. His tournament performance included a team-best 13 birdies to tie for 16th-most in the 108-player field.
Freshman
Conrad Brown closed out his first NCAA appearance with a 3-under-par 68 for the Vikings lowest individual score of the tournament. Brown moved up 26 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 50th in the field at 3-over-par 216. Brown's final round featured six birdies and a 4-under-par 31 on the front nine.
Senior
Aidan Thain closed out his collegiate career with a 1-under-par 70 on Saturday and tied for 59th in the field at 5-over-par 218. On his final nine holes, the GNAC Golfer of the Year was 3-under-par.
Junior
Jordan Lee slipped to a tie for 68th place with a 6-over-par 77 and freshman
Seth King carded his best round of the tournament with a 3-over-par 74 to finish in a tie for 102nd.
Regional host Colorado State-Pueblo took home the team title at 7-under-par 845 for a one-stroke victory over Colorado Mesa. Midwestern State and Oklahoma Christian also punched tickets to the national tournament that will be held May 16-20 at TPC Michigan.
Matthew Pennington of Cal State San Marcos won individual medalist honors at 9-under-par 204, winning in a playoff over Garrett Leak of Midwestern State. Liam Allder of Cal State Monterey Bay also earned a trip to Michigan as an individual finishing two strokes back at 7-under-par 206.
