SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Washington University Varsity Eight put forth another strong performance, placing second in the Women's Cascade Cup as part of the Opening Day Regatta and Windermere Cup festivities on Saturday on Montlake Cut.
Much like their winning performance in last week's WIRA Championships, the Vikings top eight-oared boat was strong throughout the 2,000-meter course recording a slight open-water victory over regional rival Seattle Pacific University. WWU clocked a time of 6:54.456 with SPU close to five seconds back in 6:59.192. The University of Washington won the event in a speedy time of 6:35.856 with their second varsity boat.
Fielding an entirely new lineup from the WIRA Championships due to health and safety protocols, the Vikings Varsity Four placed 4th in their race behind UW, SPU and Seattle U. WWU completed the course in 8:26.350.
The No. 4 nationally-ranked and No. 2 West Region-ranked Vikings are back in action next Saturday (May 14) at the GNAC Championships on Dexter Lake outside of Eugene, Oregon. WWU will race against Central Oklahoma, Seattle Pacific and Cal Poly Humboldt in key race to determine advancement to the NCAA Rowing Championships May 27-29 in Sarasota, Florida.
