BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University Track & Field Javelin All-American Amanda Short earned a bronze medal competing for Honduras at the recently-completed Central American Championships held July 2-3 in Managua, Nicaragua.
 
Short placed 3rd in the javelin competition to earn the bronze medal with a top throw of 40.57m/133-1 to earn the bronze medal. Short was born in Honduras, but the native of Lebanon, Oregon was raised in the USA. Her brother, Zack an All-American at the University of Idaho, was a double gold medal winner in the discus and shot put.
 
"This was a wonderful experience to compete internationally for the first time, returning to visit Central America for the first time since I was born," said Short. "Up until two weeks ago, I had no plans to compete again, but life is full of wonderful surprises. I am not sure where this post-collegiate journey will lead but, regardless, I am very grateful to have had this opportunity and share this experience with my brother and my new teammates."
 
During the 2022 outdoor season, Short completed her collegiate eligibility placing 8th at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships to earn First Team All-America honors. Her season-best throw of 47.48m/155-9 was No. 2 in the West Region and No. 5 in the nation, a mark that Short is hopefully will qualify her for the NACAC Championships (North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association) August 19-21 in Grand Bahama.
 
Short is the latest Viking javelin All-American to compete on the international scene, joining Monika Gruszecki, Katie Reichert and Bethany Drake who have competed at the U.S. Track & Field Championships in recent years. Drake, a two-time NCAA II national champion, represented Team USA and earned a silver medal at the 2018 NACAC Championships in Toronto.
