BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The No. 3 nationally-ranked Western Washington University volleyball team completed a perfect 2-0 start to the 2022 season Thursday with a 3-0 sweep against Sonoma State University.
The Vikings 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 victory closed out the opening day of the WWU Invitational held on WECU Court in Carver Gym. WWU defeated No. 20 Ferris State 25-8, 25-19, 29-27 earlier in the day.
In the win over Sonoma State, senior outside hitter
Calley Heilborn led the way with 10 kills and seven digs. Senior outside hitter
Gabby Gunterman added eight kills and a career-high five service aces. Senior libero
Kasey Woodruff added a match-high 13 digs. Senior middle
Olivia Fairchild had four blocks and five kills and senior middle
Chloe Roetcisoender contributed three bocks and seven kills. Senior setter
Malia Aleaga paced the offense with 26 assists.
In the two matches Thursday, WWU combined for 21 service aces with 12 against the Seawolves.Â
SSU was led by a match-high 11 kills by Emily Hernandez.Â
WWU is back in action with one match Friday in the WWU Invitational taking on Regis at 7:30 pm.

Gabby Gunterman recorded 12 kills Thursday, passing the 1,000 career kill mark for her career. Gunterman now has 1,008 kills in 99 matches, becoming just the 15th player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill milestone.
