Late First Half Goal Sends Vikings to Victory

WWU defeats Chico State 1-0 at Harrington Field

BELLINGHAM, Wash.  – Western Washington University men's soccer freshman Ryan Rotter scored a late first-half goal to lead the Vikings to a 1-0 shutout victory over Chico State University Saturday evening at Harrington Field.

The 1-0 victory capped an undefeated first weekend of the 2022 season for the Vikings, going 1-0-1 after opening with a scoreless draw Thursday vs. Sonoma State University.

Rotter, a true freshman out of Auburn Mountainview High School, scored his first collegiate goal in the 45th minute with just 38 seconds remaining in the first half. With under a minute remaining in the half, the Vikings kept the ball alive near the sidelines with senior Dakota Stamnes finding Rotter in space just outside of the box. Rotter took a turn and dashed in through the right side of the box before angling a strong right-footed blast that tucked just inside the right post for the go-ahead goal.

The Vikings defense was against stout not allowing a goal for the second consecutive game to open the season. Senior goalkeeper Patrick Restum made a pair of saves, with Stamnes, Mitchell Hutter and Gus Diehl all playing the full 90 to help keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard. Stamnes came up with a big play early in the 18th minute with a goal-line clearance to keep Chico State off the scoreboard.

Chico State out-shot Western 10-8, but both teams recorded three shots on goal.

WWU has now opened a season with consecutive shutouts for the first time since the 2016 season, also going 1-0-1 against Chico State (W, 1-0) and Sonoma State (T, 0-0) on the road. The strong start to the 10-5-4 2016 season that began with back-to-back shutouts resulted in the program's first appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships.

The Vikings (1-0-1) return to action next Thursday (Sept. 1) hosting preseason No. 17 nationally-ranked West Texas A&M (0-0-1) in a 7 pm match at Harrington Field.
