RICHMOND, B.C. – The Western Washington University women's golf team opened the 2022-23 season Monday with the first round of the True North Classic at Richmond Country Club.

The Vikings are in fourth place in the four-team tournament hosted by Simon Fraser University. The final round of the 36-hole tournament will tee off Tuesday starting at 8:30 am.

WWU carded a team round of 34-over-par 322 on the par 72 layout. The Vikings head into the final round two strokes back of third-place University of Fraser Valley and 10 back of tournament host SFU. UBC Okanagan has a 14-stroke lead following Monday's 10-over-par team round of 298.

Senior Megan Billeter leads the WWU contingent tied for 11th place in the 29-player field following her opening round 6-over-par 78. Freshman Emma Worgum and junior Elise Sumner are tied for 14th place at 8-over-par 80.

"It was nice to be back on the course competing, but we definitely saw some nerves and tournament rust, said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "I have no doubt the team will bounce back tomorrow. This is a great group that is meshing really well together."

UBC Okanagan sophomore Emily Cornwall holds the lead for individual medalist honors carding the only round under par Monday with a 3-under-par 69.
