Late Goal Lifts Vikings 2-1 at Colorado Mines

WWU stays unbeaten at 2-0-2 on the season behind a late game-winner by Albin Jonsson in the 84th minute

GOLDEN, Colo.  – Nothing seems to be able to stop the Western Washington University men's soccer during the early part of the 2022 season.

Not even a pair of 30-minute lightning delays or conceding an early first half goal, as the Vikings stormed back to record a 2-1 victory on the road at Colorado School of Mines Thursday evening at Stermole Soccer Stadium.

The Vikings received a late first-half equalizer from sophomore Eric Bunnell and the game-winner by freshman Albin Jonsson with less than seven minutes remaining in the game. Junior Diego Alvarado assisted on the equalizer and sophomore Andrew Rotter setup the game-winning goal to Jonsson.

With the victory the Vikings remain undefeated at 2-0-2, recording one-goal victories over Chico State and now the preseason No. 20 nationally-ranked Orediggers (1-2-2). Western also has scoreless draws against Sonoma State and No. 17 West Texas A&M this season.

"It was a great win for us tonight on the road," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "We had moments of good play and moments where we needed to grind out plays. Overall it was a great team effort and win tonight."

Mines struck first in the 9th minute when Tristan Semelsberger weaved through the WWU defense before firing a right-footed shot into the low left corner for the first goal allowed by the Vikings this season. Semelsberger nearly recorded a first-half brace with his shot in the 24th minute clanking off the left post.

The Vikings first shot of the game less than four minutes into the contest nearly resulted in an early goal when Theo Steinmetz took a strike from outside the 18-yard box that was turned away by CSM goalkeeper Brian Doherty.

WWU recorded a late first-half equalizer in the 42nd minute when Diego Alvarado streaked through the right side of the box and dropped a perfect pass to Eric Bunnell who converted a right-footed strike from 6-yards out to tie the game 1-1.

The Vikings defense held Mines to only two shots on goal in the second half, both saved by senior goalkeeper Patrick Restum.

The game-winner from Jonsson came at the 83:21 mark in the game. Rotter and Jonsson connected on a give-and-go that initiated just outside of the 18-yard box. Rotter's one-touch base found the left foot of Jonsson who calmly directed it inside the near post for his first collegiate goal.

WWU was out-shot 13-9 in the 90-minute contest, but each team had four shots on target. Restum made a pair of saves and has played all 360 minutes in the Vikings undefeated start to the season.

The Vikings (2-0-2) return to action Sunday in Denver facing Regis University (2-3-0) with kickoff scheduled for 1 pm MT/12 pm PT. The complete 2022 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/22_MSOC.

NEW COLLEGE SOCCER RULES
There are likely to be a lot of tie games this season with new NCAA soccer rules for 2022 which eliminates overtime during the regular season. Any match that is tied at the 90-minute mark will now end that way, which means no overtime or golden goal scenarios. In the postseason, there will be overtime but no more golden goal; teams will play two full 10-minute extra periods regardless of any goals and if it is still tied, the advancing team will be decided on penalty kicks. Just for kicks, the WWU single-season record for ties is five set in 2017.
