Vikings Blanked at Home 1-0 by NNU

WWU holds 20-2 advantage in shots, but shut out for second consecutive game

BELLINGHAM, Wash.  – The Western Washington University men's soccer team dropped 1-0 contest at home to Northwest Nazarene in Great Northwest Athletic Conference in front of 607 fans at Harrington Field.

A late first-half goal with under two minutes remaining prior to halftime held up in the Nighthawks victory, despite WWU holding a 20-2 advantage in shots and 6-1 lead in shots on goal.

NNU's only shot on goal came at the 43:24 mark late in the first half when GNAC leading scorer Jim Wagenaar found the back of the net off a tight pass from Jonathan Cardona.

The Vikings had a rally prior to the goal by Wagenaar, including a shot by junior Jacob Sundberg from the center of the box that was blocked, but missed just wide. Following the Nighthawks goal, the Vikings would get their best chance of the first half with under 30 seconds left as sophomore Ryan Rotter unleashed a shot from outside the box that got past the keeper, but hit the right post.

The Vikings had a chance to level the match with under 15 minutes to go in the match, as senior Kyota Hiate slipped a ball past the defense to junior Andrew Rotter whose shot was saved. With a minute left in the game, the Vikings earned a free kick from just outside the box which Ryan Rotter curled around the wall, but the NNU keeper Sawyer Price made his sixth and final save to record the shutout.

WWU dropped to 4-6-3 overall and 1-4-2 in GNAC play, while NNU improved to 4-5-4 overall and 2-2-3 in conference games.
