BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University volleyball team dropped a five-set home match to Simon Fraser University Saturday evening on Pink Night on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
The Vikings held a 2-1 lead in the match, but SFU stormed back to take the final two sets to win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference match. Game scores were 22-25, 25-18, 16-25, 25-18, 15-6 in favor of the Red Leafs.
WWU received a 15-kill, 18-dig double-double from sophomore outside hitter Devyn Oestreich and a 10-kill, 8-block performance from redshirt freshman middle Emily Vossenkuhl. Redshirt freshman setter Caroline Hansen set a career-high with 26 assists and sophomore setter Adele Holland recorded a 16-assist, 13-dig double-double.
The Vikings tied their season high with 11 service aces, with Holland and Hansen each recording three and Oestreich a pair.
SFU (13-7, 8-4 GNAC) was led by a match-high 19 kills from Jocelyn Sherman (to go with 23 digs) and 18 kills by Sophie Lachapelle. The Red Leafs recorded a .253 hitting percentage, while holding the Vikings to a .215 mark.
WWU (7-13, 7-5 GNAC) remains at home next week with a pair of GNAC matches on WECU Court in Carver Gym, hosting Montana State Billings on Thursday for Unity Night and first-place Seattle Pacific on Saturday, with both matches featuring a 7 pm first serve.
