BURNABY, B.C. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 road defeat Saturday against Simon Fraser University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
WWU held a decisive 16-8 advantage over the Red Leafs in shots, with six on target, but were not able to turn the chances into goals in the road loss at Terry Fox Field at SFU Stadium.
The Vikings slipped to 4-4-2 overall and are in a tie for third place in the conference table at 1-2-1 (4 points). SFU improved to 5-2-2 overall and remained undefeated in league play at 2-0-1.
The Red Leafs got on the scoreboard first in the 29th minute when they took control deep on their end of the field after a long goal kick by WWU's Brandon Locke. SFU had a good build-up through the midfield and got the go-ahead goal on a low shot from just outside the 18-yard box from Michael Hennessy.
Clinging to the 1-0 lead, SFU added a pair of insurance goals midway through the second half. Koji Poon slotted a shot into the left side of the net in the 64th minute and Devin O'Hea made it 3-0 with a goal in the 73rd minute.
WWU erases the shutout in the 83rd minute with redshirt freshman defender Sebastiano Silvetti scoring his first collegiate goal. Freshman midfielder Edgar Serrano arched corner kick that slipped through the SFU goalkeepers hands where Silvetti pounded it home at the 82:20 mark.
In addition to doubling up SFU in shots, the Vikings also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
WWU (4-4-2, 1-2-1 GNAC) remains on the road with one match next week making the long bus ride south to Monmouth, Oregon to face conference leader Western Oregon on Thursday with kickoff scheduled for 12 pm. The complete 2023 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/23_MSOC.

In 2016 the Vikings advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships for the first time in program history, using a late-season surge that saw the Vikings 5-0-1 over the last six matches to advance to the postseason. Overall the program has produced 63 GNAC Players of the Week selections, 30 First Team All-GNAC players and 4 GNAC Players of the Year since joining the conference in 2001. Off the field, WWU has built a strong academic reputation with 71 GNAC All-Academic selections over the last six years.
