11/1/2023 3:00:00 PM

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's soccer team has already clinched a spot in the postseason and has an exciting finish to the regular season tap this week at Harrington Field.

The Vikings carry an eight-game unbeaten streak and three-game winning streak into Thursday's derby vs. Seattle Pacific (7 pm) and hosts Montana State Billings Saturday for Senior Day (1 pm) where the seven-player senior class will be recognized.

WWU enters the week at 10-3-4 overall and is in 2nd place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference table with 27 points at 8-1-3. The Vikings trail GNAC leader No. 20 nationally-ranked SPU by one point in the standings, with the conference regular-season champion determined by the end of the weekend. WWU and SPU have already clinched the top two seeds for the four-team GNAC Championships that will be held November 9-11 at Tomlinson Stadium in Ellensburg.

The Vikings finished the month of October with an undefeated 7-0-1 record and have four consecutive shutouts (376 minutes without a goal) and head into the final week of the regular season leading the GNAC with a 0.657 goals against average. WWU is coming off a week with home victories over Western Oregon (1-0) and Saint Martin's (2-0).

In addition to climbing to near the top of the GNAC table, the Vikings have risen to claiming a top West Regional ranking listed No. 4 in the first ordered edition of the West Region rankings.

The Vikings have been powered by the strong recent play of sophomore midfielder Morgan Manalili, who has scored five of her team-leading six goals over the last five games. WHAT'S ON TAP

The Vikings (10-3-4, 8-1-3 GNAC) concludes the regular season this week with a pair of home games at Harrington Field, hosting rival Seattle Pacific Thursday night (7 pm) and Montana State Billings Saturday afternoon (1 pm) for Senior Day. The complete 2023 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/23_WSOC with direct links on how to follow the team on the road and to purchase home game tickets online.

TITLE POSSIBILITIES

The Vikings are aiming for a repeat GNAC regular-season title, which would be the 10th in program history. The formula is pretty straightforward from the conference perspective. A pair of WWU victories at Harrington Field this week vs. SPU and MSUB and the Vikings will win the title to earn the No. 1 seed in the conference championship tournament. An SPU victory Thursday would seal the title for the Falcons. A few different scenarios exist involving ties, but two victories and the Vikings will hang another GNAC banner.

UNDEFEATED OCTOBER

The Vikings navigated a tough October stretch undefeated, going 7-0-1 in conference play. WWU combined to go 4-0- in home games at Harrington Field during the month and 3-0-1 on the road. Western entered the month with a 3-3-3 overall mark and 1-1-2 GNAC record, but have climbed the standings and regional rankings with the undefeated eight-game stretch.

THE SENIOR SEVEN

Prior to the start of Saturday's regular-season finale vs. Montana State Billings (1 pm kickoff), the Vikings will recognize the seven-player senior class with an on-field ceremony. Katie Watt, Claire Henninger, Payton Neal, Jayden Nguyen, Abigail Trengove, Chloe Unflat and Ellie Busik will play their final regular-season game at Harrington Field. The group has combined for one of the best stretches in program history dating back to 2019, with the Vikings going 71-14-13 (.791) while playing in a pair of national championship games and winning the 2022 title.

2023 WWU Women's Soccer Senior Seven

EXTENDED SOLID STRETCH

WWU has only one defeat over its last 13 games going 8-1-4 during this stretch dating back to September 18. The Vikings carry a season-high eight-game unbeaten winning into the final week of the regular season, going 7-0-1 during this stretch. The Vikings are in second place in the GNAC standings with a 8-1-1 record (21 points).

SCORELESS MINUTES & SHUTOUT STREAK

The Vikings carry a string of 376 consecutive scoreless minutes into Thursday's derby match vs. Seattle Pacific, riding a streak of four consecutive shutouts. WWU last allowed a goal late in the 74th minute in the 2-1 road victory over Simon Fraser on October 14. Western leads the GNAC with 10 shutouts and a 0.65 goals against average.

POSTSEASON TICKET PUNCHED

WWU has punched its ticket to the postseason securing one of the four spots in the GNAC Championships to be held November 9-11 in Ellensburg at Tomlinson Stadium. The Vikings have now advanced to play in all 11 GNAC Tournaments and are six-time champions of the postseason championships (2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022). Tickets for the GNAC Women's Soccer Championships are currently on sale via GNACTickets.com.

BATTLE ROYALE

One of the great rivalries in college soccer, WWU (2016, 2022) and Seattle Pacific (2008) each have claimed an NCAA Division II national championship. WWU has advanced to the NCAA Championships in each of the last 10 seasons, while SPU has appeared in 16 of the last 19 seasons. WWU (9) and SPU (9) have combined to capture 18 of the 21 GNAC regular-season titles.

FORMER FALCON

WWU head coach Travis Connell was a four-year letterman for the SPU men's soccer team from 1991-95, helping lead the Falcons to 1993 national championship.

DOUBLE-DIGIT VICTORIES

The Vikings secured the 10th win of the season last Saturday at home vs. Saint Martin's, marking the 17th consecutive full season to record double-digits in victories. WWU has an active streak of 19 consecutive seasons with a winning record, one of the longest streaks in NCAA Division II.
