Vikings Record Run-Rule Victory Over SFU

WWU defeats Simon Fraser 10-2 behind Ramirez Gem and Timely Hitting

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University softball team recorded a 10-2 run-rule victory in 6 innings over Simon Fraser University on Saturday in non-conference action.

The game was played on the turf at Sehome High School due to unplayable field conditions at Viking Field.

The Vikings improved to 8-6 on the season behind another strong pitching effort from starter Mareena Ramirez, who logged a complete-game victory with 10 strikeouts to improve to 6-1 on the season. In nine appearances (7 starts) this season, the right-hander has a 1.18 ERA (9 ER, 53.1 IP) with 58 strikeouts. In Saturday's start vs. SFU, Ramirez allowed three hits and two runs (1 ER).

WWU's bats had another productive day at the plate with 10 hits, led by multi-hit games from leadoff hitter Kinzey Williams (2-for-2, R, BB) and outfielder Isabel Cargill (2-for-2, R, 2B). Third baseman Amaya Davis had a two-run double and shortstop Hailey Rath drove in three runs going 1-for-3 with her team-leading fourth double of the season.

The Vikings went down 1-0 on an unearned run in the top of the 3rd inning, but responded in a big way with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Davis had the big hit with a two-run double to left field. WWU added a run in the 4th inning on a sacrifice fly by Rath and enacted the 8-run rule with four runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Outfielder McKenna Crum plated the game-ending run with a single to left-center field to score Davis.

SFU (5-11) was limited to just three hits in the game, with left fielder Abby McGlynn, first baseman Caitlin Zagari and third baseman Kristen Davyduke each tallying singles.

WWU is back in action Monday with a non-conference doubleheader at Saint Martin's scheduled to start at noon at Saints Field in Lacey.
