Vikings Place 9th in Spring Opening Tourney

Megan Billeter records top-10 finish tying for 7th place

VISTA, Calif. – The Western Washington University women's golf team wrapped up its spring-opening event placing 9th out of 15 teams at the Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge Golf Club.

 

WWU began the day tied for 6th place, but slipped on the leaderboard three spots despite showing a four-stroke improvement from Monday's opening round. On Tuesday the Vikings fired a team score of 25-over-par 313 to finish the 36-hole tournament at 54-over-par 630.

 

Senior Megan Billeter earned her second top-10 finish of the season tying for 7th place at 8-over-par 152. Billeter fired a final round score of 3-over-par 75 featuring three birdies. Over the course of the two-day tournament Billeter recorded five birdies to tie for 5th-most in the 77-player field. 

 

Junior Dani Bailey tied for 29th at 14-over-par 158 (78-80) and freshmen Emma Worgum and Claire Moon tied for 40th at 16-over-par 160.

 

WWU entered the tournament ranked No. 42 in NCAA Division II via the Golfstat Relative Team Rankings, and finished ahead of a pair of teams listed higher in the rankings. No. 26 Cal State Monterey Bay won the team title with a two-round score of 34-over-par 610 for a four-stroke victory over tournament host No. 14 Cal State San Marcos.

 

Ali Kim of Point Loma pulled away from a tie for the lead in the race for individual medalist honors carding a final-round even-par 72 for a two-stroke victory over Brady Turnquist of Biola.

 

WWU returns to action with the second of three spring regular-season tournaments at the Pack Classic March 19-20 hosted by Colorado State-Pueblo at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colorado.

ABOUT WWU WOMEN'S GOLF

The WWU women's golf team is in its 30th season as an intercollegiate sport in 2022-23. WWU has a rich history on the links, winning the first five GNAC Championships beginning in 2011 and returned to the podium with back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022. WWU made its 12th appearance in the NCAA II West Regional Championships in 2022 after earning the GNAC's automatic bid. WWU has also made six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in nine of the 11 years it has been awarded, including 2021-22 award winner Megan Billeter. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has had nine All-Americans.
