ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Led by a second consecutive tournament victory by senior Jordan Lee, the Western Washington University men's golf team closed out the regular-season portion of the 2022-23 schedule placing fourth at the West Regional Spring Preview.
The Vikings completed the three-round, 54-hole tournament with a team score of 3-over-par 867 (287-291-289) on the par 72 Foxtail Golf Club. The 21-team tournament featured a stacked field with 13 teams ranked in the top 50 in the nation via the Golfstat Team Rankings.
WWU was one stroke back of third-place Hawai'i Hilo, with tournament host Sonoma State placing 2nd at 1-under-par 863. Cal State San Marcos was crowned the team champion recording a 10-stroke victory after firing a 7-under-par final round.
"It was a good tournament for us continuing a good stretch to complete the regular season," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "I would love to see us clean up some of the bogeys, but all-in-all I am proud of the team for a very solid performance."
Lee won his second consecutive tournament sharing medalist honors with Matthew Pennington of Cal State San Marcos. Lee turned in three more rounds of par or better in the tournament finishing at 8-under-par 208 (69-70-69) and has now recorded 17 of 21 rounds this season at or under par.
"Jordan looked great all tournament and was in complete control from when he teed off Monday morning," added Bennett. "Jordan has put in a lot of work to get to this point, and it is pretty special to see it all pay off. I am looking forward to seeing how he carries this into the postseason."
Over the course of the three-day tournament, Lee carded 14 birdies to tie for the third-most in the 115-player field and also recorded an eagle.
Sophomore Seth King also finished with 14 birdies in the tournament and tied for 11th place at even-par 216 (71-72-73). Sophomore Matteo Polla tied for 27th at 4-over-par 220 (73-74-73), sophomore Conrad Brown tied for 41st at 7-over-par 223 (74-75-74) and senior Cody Oakes recorded three consecutive rounds of 3-over-par 75 to tie for 53rd place.
Lee and Pennington were two strokes in front of third-place Cutter Ayres of Cal State San Marcos. There was no individual playoff following the conclusion of the tournament due to travel plans for both teams.
The West Regional Spring Preview serves as a first look at the course that will host the 2023 NCAA Division II West/South Central Super Regional May 11-13. The Vikings are in good position to qualify for their 24th consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships with a top five regional ranking entering the regional preview.
With the regular season portion of the 2022-23 schedule now complete, the Vikings turn their attention to the GNAC Championships that will be held April 24-25 at the GNAC Championships in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho at the Coeur d'Alene Golf Resort. WWU is the defending conference champions and won the team title 10 times in the 14-year history of the event.
