ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Western Washington University Track & Field program had a successful trip over the mountains Saturday competing in the CWU Wildcat Open.
The WWU men's and women's teams combined to record five event wins, 19 podium finishes and five program top-10 marks during the all-day meet at the CWU Recreation Sports Complex.
Sophomore sprinter
Brian Le led the way recording a pair of top-10 program times, placing 4th in the 100m with a time of 10.80 (T-10th in WWU history) and 2nd in the 200m in 21.74 (5th in WWU history).
Event winners for the Vikings included
Elie Bassett in the women's 800m (2:16.35),
Laura Halsell in the women's 3,000m steeplechase (11:35.42),
Alec Ritter in men's 3,000m steeplechase (9:52.58),
Trent Kibler in the men's high jump (1.95m/6-4.75) and
Matty Lagerwey in the women's long jump (5.59m/18-4.25).
Racing in her hometown, sophomore
Caitlyn Cheney placed 2nd in both the 100m (12.43) and 200m (25.28) sprint events. Junior
Katie Potts placed 2nd in the shot put setting a PR with a throw of 44.38m/145-7. Sophomore
Annie Tran placed 3rd in the pole vault setting a collegiate PR clearing 3.51m/11-6.25.
The women's 4x100 relay finished 2nd and in 47.78 for the No. 5 time in program history.

The Vikings return to Bellingham to host its lone home meet of the season next Saturday with the 41st Annual
Ralph Vernacchia Invitational at Civic Stadium on April 29. With the regular-season portion of the 2023 outdoor schedule winding down, the Vikings will begin preparations for the GNAC Championships that will be held May 12-13 in Monmouth, Oregon at McArthur Field.
