Vikings Advance to 24th Consecutive NCAA Men's Golf Regional Championships

WWU is the No. 3 seed in the West Region following another strong regular-season performance

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – For the 24th consecutive season the Western Washington University men's golf is headed to the NCAA Championships.
 
The Vikings were announced as the No. 3 seed in the West Region and will compete in the 20-team West/South Central Super Regional that will be played May 11-13 at Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park, California. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will feature a 108-player field and will be hosted by Sonoma State University.
 
Ten teams from each the West and South Central Regions punched their ticket to the NCAA Division II Championships, with the top five teams on top of the leaderboard following the three rounds qualifying for the NCAA II Championship Finals that will be held May 22-26 at Avalon Lakes Country Club in Warren, Ohio.
 
WWU punched its ticket by way of another solid regular season, earning the No. 3 seed in the West Region. The Vikings five event spring schedule featured four top five finishes, a tournament win and a tie for 1st at the GNAC Championships. WWU officially placed 2nd at the conference tournament after being defeated in a two-hole team playoff by Simon Fraser University, who earned the No. 4 seed.
 
The Vikings are led by senior All-America candidate Jordan Lee, who carries a 70.71 scoring average (-1.00 to par) into the NCAA Championships. Lee has won each of his last three tournaments, including medalist honors earlier this week at the GNAC Championships and tied for first place at the West Regional Spring Preview that was held at the same location as the regional tournament. The senior has recorded 10 consecutive rounds of par or better and 20 of 24 during his historic season.
 
WWU also features a balanced team that has put together one of the best stroke averages in program history at 289.63 (+2.79 to par). Senior co-captain Cody Oakes tied for 3rd at the GNAC Championships and sophomores Conrad Brown (tied for 9th) and Seth King (tie for 12th) help bolster the deep roster.
 
Western carries a No. 19 national ranking in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll and was listed No. 13 in the last Golfstat.com Relative Team Rankings. Cal State San Marcos is the top seed in the West Region, with tournament host Sonoma State No. 2. Oklahoma Christian holds down the top spot in the South Central Region and Cameron is the No. 2 seed.
 
10th-year head coach Luke Bennett will announce the starting lineup of five golfers for the 54-hole tournament prior to the start of play.
 
The NCAA Division II Championship field consists of 80 teams and 32 individuals that will play in the super regional tournaments across the country May 11-13. WWU has competed at the NCAA II National Championship Tournament nine times in program history, last finishing 16th at the 2017 tournament in Kissimmee, Florida.
 
THE SUPER REGIONAL FIELD
Here is a look at the 20-team field for the 2023 West/South Central NCAA Division II Golf Championships that will be played May 11-13 at Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park, California. The top 10 teams in the West and South Central Regions, along with four individuals from the region, make up the 108-player field. The tournament is a 54-hole, three-round competition with 18 holes played each day (Thursday – Friday – Saturday). The top five teams will advance to the NCAA II Men's Golf Championships May 22-26 at Avalon Lakes Country Club in Warren, Ohio. The finals will be hosted by the Mountain East Conference and Avalon Lakes at The Grand Resort.

ABOUT WWU MEN'S GOLF
The WWU men's golf team has an incredible streak of advancing to the NCAA Championships in each of the 2243 seasons the program has competed at the NCAA Division II level dating back to the 1998-99 season. WWU placed 3rd at the 2013 national championship for the highest finish in program history. The program has produced 16 NCAA All-Americans and has won 10 of 15 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships since the tournament debuted in 2008. The Vikings have also featured the GNAC Championships individual medalist in 10 of 15 tournaments with Jordan Lee joining the elite list of conference champions in 2023 and nine GNAC Player of the Year awards.
