Vikings in the Hunt at NCAA Regional

WWU is tied for 8th place in 20-team Super Regional in Rohnert Park, California

5/11/2023 8:58:00 PM

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Through the opening round of the 2023 NCAA Division II West/South Central Super Regional Championships the Western Washington University men's golf team is tied for 8th place in the 20-team field.

The Vikings carded an opening round team score of 7-over-par 295 to sit in a three-way tie for 8th place with Colorado State-Pueblo and Cal State Monterey Bay.

Oklahoma Christian fired a first-round leading 7-under-par 281 to carry an eight-stroke lead into Friday's second round on the par 72 Foxtail Golf Club. Western New Mexico, Simon Fraser and Stanislaus State are all tied for 2nd place at 1-over-par 289.

Senior All-America candidate Jordan Lee and First Team All-GNAC sophomore Seth King paced the Vikings in Thursday's first round with 1-under-par rounds of 71 to tie for 6th individually in the 108-player field. Lee continued his late-season dominance carding his 11th consecutive round of par or better.

Junior Drew Halili is tied for 60th at 4-over-par 76 and sophomore Conrad Brown is tied for 74th at 5-over-par 77.

WWU had a great start to the first round holding the tournament lead through a portion of the front nine, but played the back nine at 8-over-par as a team.

"We hung in there until the end, showing some nerves and indecisiveness down the stretch," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "The good news is it is just day one and we are still very much in the hunt. Tomorrow is a big day for the team and I am confident they put together a great second round."

Peyton Jones of Colorado Christian holds the lead for individual medalist honors after carding a 6-under-par 66 on Thursday.

WWU will tee off starting at 8:20 am for Friday's second round with live scoring available via Golfstat.com.

The 20-team Super Regional features 18 holes each day in the three-round, 54-hole tournament with the top five teams (and top two individuals on non-advancing teams) qualifying for the NCAA II Championship Finals that will be held May 22-26 at Avalon Lakes Country Club in Warren, Ohio.

The NCAA Division II Championship field consists of 80 teams and 32 individuals that will play in the super regional tournaments across the country May 11-13. WWU has competed at the NCAA II National Championship Tournament nine times in program history, last finishing 16th at the 2017 tournament in Kissimmee, Florida.
