Vikings Fall to Yotes in Straight Sets

WWU concludes opening day of 2023 season with 25-22, 25-11, 25-17 defeat

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Western Washington University volleyball team concluded the opening day of the 2023 season with a 3-0 loss to No. 19 nationally-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Thursday evening at the Yotes Classic Showcase.

The No. 15 Vikings dropped a pair of matches to ranked opponents Thursday to open the season 0-2, falling 25-22, 25-11, 25-17 to the Yotes in the nightcap. WWU tested No. 18 Regis in the earlier match but fell in four sets.

WWU featured a youthful roster with 10 of 11 players that saw action listed as underclassmen in eligibility. The Vikings had six players make their collegiate debut on Thursday.

"We are just making too many unforced errors, but the good thing is that is within our control," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "There's a lot of volleyball left and we are looking to continue growing each time we take the court."

In the match vs. the Yotes redshirt freshman outside hitter Delaney Speer capped a solid first day on the court with 10 kills and eight digs, finishing averaging 2.86 kills and 3.36 points per set in her first two matches as a Viking.

"Delaney had a great debut with double-digit kills in each match," added Flick-Williams.

Sophomore Devyn Oestreich added eight kills and five digs, and sophomore setter Adele Holland dished out 27 assists.
