Pair of Mile School Records Fall in Seattle

Kevin McDermott and Sophie Wright break WWU indoor mile records

1/27/2024 7:14:00 PM

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Washington University Track & Field program wrapped up competition Saturday at the UW Invitational and the Mile City event inside Dempsey Indoor on the University of Washington campus.

A pair of record-breaking performances in the mile by Kevin McDermott and Sophie Wright highlighted Saturday's performances. A total of three school records – two by McDermott – and 16 program top-10 marks were achieved during the two-day meet.

A day after setting WWU's record in the 5000m, McDermott was at it again with a program-best 4:02.13 in the mile. McDermott placed 18th out of 322 competitors in the Mile City race, breaking the previous WWU mark of 4:02.28 set in 2022 by Mac Franks. Ironically, Franks also raced as an unattached runner after completing his collegiate eligibility and placed 9th in a time of 3:57.70.

Wright set the women's indoor record in the mile with a time of 4:52.96 to better the previous record set by teammate Ila Davis last season in 4:53.51. Wright placed 40th out of 199 finishers in the Mile City event, with 16 Vikings running the race.

Sophomore Emmy Kroontje ran the 2nd-fastest indoor 800m in program history clocking 2:12.70, nearly chasing down the record of 2:11.82 set by Rachael Johnson at the 2009 NCAA II Indoor Championships.

Additional program top-10 marks achieved by the Viking women on Saturday included the No. 6 time in the 400m by junior Caitlyn Cheney (58.21) and the No. 6 mark in the pole vault by freshman Sydney Mohlman clearing 3.65m/11-11.75.

Senior Ryan Greenwalt recorded his third top-10 mark of the season leaping a personal-best of 6.97m/22-10.5 for the No. 7 mark in WWU indoor history. Greenwalt tied for the 7th-fastest 200m time Friday (22.26) in program history and two weeks ago ran 6.87 in the 60m dash for the No. 2 mark in program history.

Sophomore Maurice Woodring placed 9th in a tough 400m field running 49.18 to move up to No. 4 in WWU indoor history and junior Brian Le clocked 49.29 in the 400m race for the No. 6 mark in program history.
