SEATTLE, Wash. – School records set by senior Marian Ledesma in the 800m and junior Caitlyn Cheney in the 60m dash highlighted the Western Washington University Track & Field performances Saturday to wrap up competition in the Husky Classic.
The Vikings finished the two-day competition in Dempsey Indoor on the University of Washington campus with three program records and 18 program top-10 marks.
A day after junior Kevin McDermott smashed the WWU indoor record in the 3000m, Ledesma had another banner performance breaking the 15-year-old school record in the 800m. The All-American raced to a 20th-place finish in the event clocking 2:10.13 to break the old record of 2:11.82 set in 2009 by Rachael Johnson. Ledesma's previous best indoor time in the event was 2:11.42 with Azusa Pacific at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Cheney broke through with the fastest time in the 60m dash in program history clocking 7.71 seconds in the prelims of the event at the Husky Classic. The junior from Ellensburg also moved up to No. 4 on the program 400m indoor list in a time of 57.86 seconds.
Freshman Annabelle Heiman recorded a pair of program top-10 marks in the 60m dash (7.89, T6th) and the 400m (8th, 58.56). Freshman pole vaulter Sydney Mohlman moved up to No. 5 in program history clearing 3.67m/12-0.5).
Senior Ryan Greenwalt advanced to the finals of the 60m dash and placed 7th, equaling his program No. 2 time in the event in 6.87 seconds. Junior Brian Le placed 2nd in the 400m in a personal-best time of 49.10 to rank No. 4 in WWU indoor history. Junior Lucas Brenek also had a strong time in the 400m clocking 49.75 to place 4th in the event with the No. 10 time in program history. Junior Sam Lingwall also recorded a top-10 time in the mile running 4:10.89 to move up to No. 7 in the record book.
WWU also had a pair of top-10 program times in men's and women's 4x400 relay, with the women moving up to No. 3 with a time of 3:54.77 (Cheney, Heiman, Mansfield, Ledesma) and the men ranking 4th in 3:17.69 (Le, Woodring, Brenek, Greenwalt).
The Vikings are back in action in just over a week competing at the 2024 GNAC Indoor Track & Field Championships February 19-20 at The Podium in Spokane.
