ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Western Washington University women's golf team opened the spring season with the first round of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout Monday at Corica Park South Course.
WWU is tied for 10th place in the 16-team field in the tournament hosted by Cal State East Bay. The Vikings carded a team round of 25-over-par 313.
Sophomore Emma Worgum led the Vikings with a 3-over-par 75 to sit in a tie for 14th place in the 96-player field. Worgum had a fantastic start with three birdies in her first four holes and finished with four consecutive pars to record the 3-over-par round.
Sophomore Lauren Lee is tied for 32nd (+5, 77) and senior Dani Bailey is tied for 42nd place (+7, 79).
WWU is one stroke back of 9th-place Dominican and 10 strikes behind a spot in the top five in the deep tournament field.
"It was great to be back out competing. We showed some nerves at times but all in all it wasn't a bad start to the spring season," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "Emma (Worgum) played really solid from beginning to end and managed the fast greens extremely well."
Cal State LA holds a seven-shot lead over Sonoma State heading into the final round after recording a team round of 4-over-par 292. Cal State Monterey Bay and host Cal State East Bay are tied for third place at 12-over-par 300 and defending DIII national champion George Fox is in fifth place at 15-over-par 303.
The Pioneer Shootout concludes Tuesday with an 8 am shotgun start for the 16-team field at 8 am. The Vikings will be paired with Biola, Dominican and Academy of Start starting on holes 10-11-12.

The WWU women's golf team is in its 31st season as an intercollegiate sport in 2023-24. WWU has a rich history on the links, winning the first five GNAC Championships beginning in 2011 and returned to the podium with back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022. WWU made its 12th appearance in the NCAA II West Regional Championships in 2022 after earning the GNAC's automatic bid. WWU has also made six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in nine of the 12 years it has been awarded, including 2021-22 award winner Megan Billeter. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has had nine All-Americans.
