ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf team is tied for 9th place through the first two rounds in a deep 17-team field at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Corica Park South Course.

 

Through the first two rounds the Vikings are at 8-over-par 584 following a 10-over-par 298 in the morning and a 2-under-par 286 in the afternoon. WWU is tied with Hawai'i Pacific to sit just inside the top 10, five strokes back of 8th-place Hawai'i Hilo.

 

Sophomore Peter Dionne-Yahr and junior Matteo Polla are tied for 32nd place in the 97-player field at 1-over-par 145. Dionne-Yahr (-2) and Polla (-1) turned in rounds of under par in the afternoon to help the Vikings to the fourth-lowest afternoon round in the field (-2, 286).

 

Junior Seth King fired consistent rounds of 1-over-par 73 to sit in a tie for 36th place and junior Cole Reynolds made his spring debut with rounds of 76 (+4) and 72 (E) to tie for 47th at 4-over-par 148. 

 

Western New Mexico jumped out to a 13-stroke lead in the team competition with a 16-under-par 272 in the afternoon round leading the way. Sonoma State is in 2nd place at 9-under-par 567 and tournament host Cal State East Bay is in 3rd at 8-under-par 568.

 

Tyler Ashman of Chico State holds the lead for individual medalist honors at 8-under-par 136 (66-70), one stroke better than a five-way tie for 2nd place by Adam Niles of Western New Mexico, Nate Jetton of Stanislaus State, Shion Suzuki of Hawai'i Pacific, Adam Brangefalt of Cal State East Bay and Cameron Kaiser of Santa Clara.

 

Tuesday's final round of the Pioneer Shootout tees off with a shotgun start at 8 am with the Vikings paired with Hawai'i Pacific, Northwest Nazarene and Westminster.
